It’s a welcomed new challenge - Appiah

Former Ghana coach, Kwesi Appiah will begin his two-year spell with Al Khartoum today, January 6.

Appiah left Accra on Monday, to begin work with the club following his inking of a two-year contract last December.

Appiah, the only indigenous coach to have qualified Ghana to the World Cup told GNA Sports at the airport that “I consider this a welcomed challenge. I have had enough rest to reflect on a lot of things.

“I am very ready for this challenge and I must admit I like the welcome I have received from the club thus far. I understand the challenge ahead; together it will be confronted well for the common success we seek.”

Al Khartoum finished fourth in the 2014 Sudanese Premier League and set to feature in the 2015 CAF Confederation Cup with the side keen on counting on Appiah’s expertise in their quest to impress at the continental club competitions.

He said: “The dream is to work hard and break the monopoly in the Sudanese league. The players have responded well, we all agree to what must be done to achieve this and I am completely focused on getting results.”

This is the first time, Appiah, 54, will be coaching a side outside Ghana and he is quick to point out the challenge ahead.

“It is a whole new page in my career and one that I am completely ready for. This is normal in the kind of job I do and as a coach, you just want to do well; home or abroad.”

Appiah led Ghana to a fourth place finish at the last edition of the Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa before qualifying the team to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
