Former President John Dramani Mahama has gifted Ghana's amputee football team $10,000 as a reward for winning the 2024 Amputee African Cup of Nations.

The team paid a courtesy call on the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer on Wednesday, June 12, 2024, to present the trophy to him.

In a video sighted by GhanaWeb, Mahama congratulated the team before handing over the check to them for their magnificent achievement.

The national amputee team defeated Morocco 2-1 in the finals of the 2024 AAFCON to emerge as champions.

The Black Challengers had to come from behind to defend their title successfully.

The presidential aspirant of the NDC, in a previous post on Facebook, hailed the Amputee team for their astonishing feat achieved in Egypt.

In the post, he expressed concern over the team being neglected and not receiving what is due to them.

"Your remarkable victory has brought glory to the team and filled the hearts of Ghanaians with immense pride.

Amid our profound excitement, it is deeply troubling to see that our national athletes, who have brought so much pride to our nation, are not receiving the support and recognition they rightfully deserve," he stated on his Facebook page.

He added that he is committed to ensuring that other sporting disciplines in the country get the necessary attention if he is voted into power.

"It is my unwavering commitment to ensure that all sports, from the most popular to the lesser-known ones like amputee football, receive the support and development they need. Every athlete, regardless of the sport they play, deserves our recognition and support.

"Our talented and hardworking athletes should not have to fight for recognition and payment that is rightfully theirs. This is not just a desire, but a necessity. It is high time for a change, and I am resolute in my determination to lead this change."
