Dutch-born Ghanaian forward Johnathan Opoku opened the scoring for VVV Venlo as they posted a convincing 3-0 win over rivals Dordrecht in the Dutch Eerste Divisie on Monday.
Opoku, 25, raced the Yellows into the lead with a fantastic effort in the 12th minute before Vito van Crooy scored to add to a Danzell Gravenberch own-goal to win and improve their promotion chances.
The game had started on a slow note but Opoku, who had scored five (5) goals before going into the game, latched onto a sensible well placed wall-pass from Ralf Seuntjens and rounded up the Dordrecht goalkeeper to plant the ball home for his 6th league goal in 24 games.
Venlo went on to dominate after the break and bagged two other goals to seal the points and close in on leaders Sparta Rotterdam whose 58 points are 9 points better than Venlo and still have a game in hand to clear.
Opoku has spent all his career time in the Dutch second-tier playing two seasons each for Oss and Veendam. But he looks in pole position to snatch promotion with Venlo this season.
