Ghana forward Jordan Ayew played an influential role for Aston Villa who withstood jeers and boos from home fans to defeat League Two side Wycombe Wanderers 2-0 to set a 4th round clash with Manchester City.

The Black Stars player, 24, was started in attack by Villa boss Remi Garde in attack alongside with Benin forward Ruby Gestde and he sparked life into the Villa game right from the start.

Ayew fired into Wycombe’s side-netting early on but Wanderers were the more enterprising side – and on the half-hour Sam Wood’s volley forced a sprawling save from Brad Guzan.

Striker Garry Thompson fluffed two glorious opportunities for the visitors, Clark headed a 75th-minute opener and Idrissa Gana’s late second sealed a fourth-round home tie with Manchester City.

Villa will now face Premier League rivals Manchester City in the next round of the competition as they continue their fight to survive relegation from the English top-flight.
