Allsports.com.gh sources have revealed that Ghana's Joshua Clottey (38-4, 22KOs) - and not James Kirkland - is currently the frontrunner to face Mexican superstar Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (44-1-1, 31KOs) on a televised date in December.
We reported a few weeks ago that Clottey could land a mega deal to fight Alvarez and Canelo's team have confirmed that the Ghanaian who dominated Anthony Mundine in April, is one of the leading contenders.
Clottey's promoter, Joe DeGuardia, has disclosed that he's had discussions with Golden Boy Promotions regarding an end of year fight with Canelo.
"We've had talks. I think it's a great fight and I hope it happens," DeGuardia told BoxingScene.com.
The big question, in the industry, is whether or not HBO will secure Canelo's next return. The Mexican star's last five fights were carried by Showtime, but multiple sources indicate that HBO is absolutely in the running for the December fight.
"It will be a fantastic opportunity and I will readily take up the fight if my managers get it," Clottey told Allsports.com.gh recently.
"Obviously I am very eager to be a world champion again and there is no doubt I will get the chance if I fight Canelo. I will grab the opportunity with both hands," Clottey added via phone.
