Accra: Okwawu 0-0 Goldfields

Okwawu draw with Goldfields

Accra, Aug. 9, GNA- Obuasi Goldfields survived an early scare by Okwawu United as the two teams, settled for a 0-0 drawn game in the 13th-week Kinapharma Premier League match at the Accra Sports Stadium on Saturday.

The two teams, however, had to play with 10 men each in the last 40 minutes after some nasty incidence. Goldfields' Daniel Asamoah was the first to be shown the exit by Tarkoradi-based class one referee Richard Kwaning in the 50th minute for an off-the-scene incidence; and six minutes later, he was followed by Eric Mensah of Okwawu for a reckless tackle on Owusu Sekyere.

Okwawu started the match as a stronger side and came close twice before the break, but were denied on both occasions by the woodworks. Paul Amponsah let loose a thunderbolt in the 19th minute after a mid air tussle with Sekyere while in the 36th minute, David Mensah, formerly of Great Olympics, saw his pile driver just outside the "18", graze the cross bar to the chagrin of the fans.

The Miners settled in the game slowly but when they finally did, they were a delight to watch. Cameroonian import Valentine Atem, who was the "terror" upfront, combined beautifully with leading goal-king Shaibu Yakubu but their threatening moves were thwarted by the Okwawu defenders.

Atem's 26th minute close range shot went across the face of the posts while Shaibu's clever lob over goalkeeper Fatau Alhassan was scooped.

Goldfields looked a more probable side to carry the day in the last 15 minutes as they launched a last minute attack but skipper George Tutu and his men at the rear for Okwawu frustrated them. 09 Aug. 2003
