The Egyptian club Al Ahly consolidated its African number one clubs ranking position in front of its fellow Egyptian rivals Zamalek thanks to the addition of two more African titles to its impressive line-up of achievements: The 2001 CAF Champions League and the 2002 Super cup.

Al Ahly tops the table with 46 points followed by Zamalek 38, KOTOKO & Canon Yaounde 34, Esperance 30 and Asec Abidjan 29.

Accra Hearts of Oak and Africa Sports share the 7th position with 27 points followed by JSK of Algeria with 26 points. Mazembe Englebert of RD Congo and ESS of Tunisia share the 10th place with 22 points.

The classification, which is established by CAF since 1993 is made on the following basis:

For the CAF Cup, Cup winners cup and the Cup of Champion Clubs (until 1996): 4 points for the champion, 3 for the runner-up, 2 for a place in the semi-finals and 1 point for a place in the quarter finals.

For the Champions League (since 1997): 5 points for the champion, 4 for the runner-up, 3 for the clubs ranked 2nd in each group (the loosing semi-finalists in 2001) 2 points for the 3rd of each group and 1 for the 4th.

Super cup: 1 point. World Clubs championship: 2 points per round crossed.
