Accra, Jan 10, GNA - Supporters of Kumasi Asante Kotoko may still not have recovered from the shock of losing the maiden Confederation Cup finals to their bitterest rivals, Accra Hearts of Oak, but to coach Hans-Dieter Schmidt, it was another day of football.
The coach whose fate with the club currently hangs in a balance, refused to talk to the press after the game against Hearts and preferred to tag the defeat as "a normal game, and that the result should not count much".
He told the GNA Sports that, "I don't feel nothing inside, I would have loved to win but I am not disappointed I lost. I see nothing wrong out here. We just didn't win and that's all".
The German who refused to give any credit to the Phobians, for once again cancelling their lead to throw the game into the lottery of penalties said, "my boys did well and I am very pleased with their performance. I don't believe Hearts was better or luckier, we simply didn't win".
Coach Schmidt who was buoyant before the game and was expecting a fitting birthday present at the expense of the archrivals, amazingly expressed surprise with the jubilation by the Phobians, when he quizzed, " why are they so excited for winning penalties. It could have gone either way you know".
Contrary to views that Kotoko who wasted countless scoring chances could have wrapped up victory during the regulation time, Schmidt believes the club fared well irrespective of the outcome of the match.
"I'm proud of what my boys did. They played as expected and I simply don't blame them for anything", Schimdt stated.
The coach's tactics and mode of substitution have been fiercely criticised by the supporters and the club's top hierarchy and could as well be on his way out.
The GNA Sports can confirm that the German coach who guided King Faisal to win their first major trophy last season by winning the Top Four Tournament could receive the boot in the next few days. The management of the club is expected to hold a crisis meeting on Monday to determine the fate of the coach.
Kotoko relinquished an early lead in their Confederation Cup final match against Hearts and stumbled in front of their intimidating and expectant fans when the lottery of penalty was evoked in a game, which the bookmakers had favoured them.
