Kuffour 'fingers' Akaminko for Congo draw

Former Black Stars defender, Sammy Kuffour has put the blame for Ghana’s inability to claim all three points in the opening CAN 2013 group B match against DR Congo on poor defending.

Reacting to the 2-2 draw moments after the final whistle on supersport’s live telecast of the tournament on DSTV, Kuffour said the two central defenders on the day did not help the Ghana cause against the Congolese attack especially after the Black Stars took 2-0 lead.

“It was a poor performance from the two central defenders especially Jerry Akamin who was at fault for both goals Ghana conceded.”

Kuffour continued: “He gave too much room to Mputu for the first goal and especially for the second goal, he should have guarded the opponent away and not allow him to get into the penalty box before fouling him. I am very disappointed,” Kuffuor said.

For South Africa Benni McCarthy who is only missing the tournament due to injury, Ghana failed to win simply because the Black Stars were complacent. “Ghana will be disappointed they did not win but they have to blame themselves because I think they were complacent. If you look at some of the chances Asamoah Gyan got that he failed to score, you shouldn’t blame anyone when your opponents hit you back,” 1998 Nation’s Cup goal king and best player, McCarthy said.
