Head Coach for the Black Stars of Ghana, James Kwesi Appiah has expressed his belief in the abilities of general captain Asamoah Gyan despite not handing him a starting role at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.

Gyan who is Ghana’s all-time leading goal scorer is yet to be handed a starting role for the Black Stars in the continental showpiece currently ongoing in Egypt.

Speaking at a pre-match conference on Monday ahead of Ghana’s final group F match against Guinea Bissau on Tuesday afternoon, Coach James Kwesi Appiah has reiterated that he believes in the dangerous striker and he will be giving him his opportunities whiles the tournament progress.

According to him, the technical team assesses all players before a match to decide the best lineup to come up with depending on the kind of opponent they are going to play as well as the conditions of all players in camp.

“I don’t think we’re going to have a lot of changes”.

“No one has believed in Gyan more than I have”.

“We’ve been having training sessions. Every coach assesses how training goes and chooses players for a particular game.

“It depends on how he [Gyan] performs at training, then I will decide whether he plays or not”, Coach Kwesi Appiah added.

Ghana needs to beat Guinea Bissau later today or risk being booted out of the tournament at the preliminary stage. It is unclear if Gyan will be given a starting role or not.
