It’s win or bust for the Black Stars of Ghana as they take on less-fancied Djurtus of Guinea-Bissau in a final Group F tie in the 2019 AFCON.
Pressure is mounting on the Stars to deliver after two successive draws against Cameroon and Benin and despite a draw being enough to carry them through, the Black Stars must win today to ease the pressure back home.
The team has been ravaged by injuries to three key players with Newcastle forward Christian Atsu having to cut short his stay with the team to undergo treatment at Newcastle.
Thomas Agyepong who suffered injury in the opener against Benin is still out and has been joined on the treatment table by defender Jonathan Mensah who had a great game against Cameroon.
Unlike Ghana who need just a draw to advance, Guinea-Bissau must do the unthinkable by beating one of the favourites of the tournament to go through to the next round.
Youngster Kwabena Owusu who impressed in a cameo against Cameroon has been handed a starting berth alongside Samuel Owusu who also had a good game against the Indomitable Lions.
Kwadwo Asamoah has returned to the bench while striker Asamoah Gyan has been named on the bench for the third time.
It’s the first meeting of the two nations and Ghana are obviously favourites to win this tie but the Stars can’t afford to underestimate their opponents who have nothing to lose in this tournament.
Guinea-Bissau are yet to score in this tournament but against a Ghanaian defence that has looked out of sorts sometimes, they should fancy their chances.
