‘Laryea told me playing in Ghana was difficult’

Former Black Stars defender Jonathan Quartey has revealed he was warned by former Ghana star Laryea Kingston about relaunching his career in Ghana.

The former OG Nice center-back rejoined AshGold last season but failed to achieve the purpose of returning to Ghana as he made a handful of appearances. His season was disturbed by injuries as he played less than 10 games for the Miners.

The 25-year-old was tipped for greater prospects following his solid performance for Kaizer Chiefs FC against Manchester United in a pre-season friendly game in South Africa when he kept Cristiano Ronaldo under close check in 2008.

Quartey, who has completed a move to newly promoted Ghana Premier League side Inter Allies says former Ghana fans favourite Laryea Kingston told him playing in Ghana was a big hurdle to overcome.

“Laryea told me playing in Ghana was difficult. He is my friend and he told me he has heard I was going to back to play in Ghana,” he told Accra-based Oman FM.

Quartey, a former Ghana U17 center-back, has nine Black Stars caps and enjoyed good days with the Black Stars between 2008 and 2009, playing at the 2008 AFCON.
