Leroy rules Black Stars out of AFCON title

Frenchman Claude Leroy has ruled Ghana out of the countries likely to win the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations next month, tipping Black Stars group opponents Algeria and South Africa among the sides likely to annex the title.

The former Ghana coach, who is currently in charge of the Congo national team who have also qualified for January’s tournament in Equatorial Guinea, completely ruled out the Black Stars from the title contenders.

Leroy, who is famed for his deep knowledge of African football having coached more than seven countries in Africa for the past 20 years, revealed the countries he thinks can win the title.

The Frenchman says Algeria remains the hot favourite for the title Cameroon, Senegal and South Africa can also contend for the title given their current form.

“I think Algeria is the hot favorite for this edition, along with Cameroon, Senegal and perhaps South Africa in light of what they showed in the qualifiers,” Leroy said.

“Yes, no doubt. Ivorians have experience in this tournament, but in my opinion, Algeria is the favourite number 1 and I truly believe they will go a long way.” Ghana have been drawn in the Group of Death to face Algeria, Senegal and South Africa.
