This year’s MTN Asantehene Gold Cup takes centre stage at the Royal Golf Club in Kumasi beginning Tuesday May 20 when the Professionals event tees off to an expected tough and thrilling competition through to Friday May 23.
According to Martin Poku, Captain of the Royal Golf Club, the annual tournament held in honour of the overlord of the garden city will be extra special this year because of the expected competition in all categories amid the participation of golfers from all over the country and extending to several countries within West Africa.
In the event, the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II will officially open the 2013 Asantehene Gold Cup on Friday morning May 23 before taking on the managing Director of headline sponsors, MTN and the President of the Royal Golf Club in a special tournament ahead of a welcome cocktail at the Royal Golf Club in the evening. Saturday morning will see the start of the 2-day 18-hole tournament itself involving various categories. Saturday night is dinner time for golfers who will be guests of the Asantehene at the Manhyia Palace.
The 2013 Asantehene Gold Cup then concludes on Sunday May 25 with the final day of competition followed by presentation of prizes to winners.
“It’s going to be a very exciting week of competitive golf in a friendly atmosphere. We are expecting a huge attendance because we’ve got confirmations from Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Ivory Coast and Benin. We also expect a full house from Achimota Golf Club and other clubs all over Ghana,” Royal Golf Club Captain, Martin Poku told www.sportsinghana.com exclusively.
Mr. Poku who will supervise his first Asantehene Gold Cup as captain, added: “We are preparing the course to be in good shape for the great tournament we look forward to. We are ready to welcome all golfers and we promise them an exciting time.”
