Madina (GAR), June 24, GNA - Fire Amour Junior High School emerged champions of the Madina District Inter Circuit Basic Schools competition.
The two-week annual sports competition, which started off last Friday saw the participants engaging in athletics, football, volley ball and netball.
Ten schools including Islamic JHS, Fire Amour JHS, Baba Yara JHS and the Madina Cluster of Junior High Schools (JHS) took part in the competition at Madina in the Greater Accra Region.
Reverend Charles Carbonu, the sports instructor of the Madina Cluster of Schools in an interview with GNA Sports on Friday, said the games were geared towards helping Junior High School pupils to unearth their potentials in sports as well as keeping them fit and healthy to enable them contribute their quota to national and international teams.
He added that the games was also a catalyst to further promote and develop sports among the youth and urged the participants to take their training serious to be better placed to compete in upcoming final Inter-Schools competition.
Rev. Carbonu lamented the lack of jerseys, footballs, boots and other training kits in the various schools in the District and therefore appealed to the Ghana Education service (GES) to increase the Capitation Grant for sports to smoothen the operation of sports instructors in the Madina Circuit.
Commenting on a high school drop-out rate in the area due to poor performance at the Basic Education Certificate Examination, Rev Carbonu said he has decided to form a 91Reverend Education Football Club in the area aimed at selecting and retraining good sports boys and girls in JHS to enable them achieve higher laurels.
Rev. Carbonu urged the Government, Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service to inject more funds into promoting sports at the Basic Schools for them to successfully organize sporting competitions.
