Mawuko wins Independence Day race

Koforidua, March 8, GNA - Richard Mawuko of Koforidua made a time of one hour, 48 minutes to scale over 69 other competitors in this year's 60 kilometres BIC Independence Day Cycling Race at Koforidua on Saturday.

The competition, organized by ASONE, Accra-based cycling Sports promoters under the auspices of the Eastern Region branch of the Ghana Cycling Association was to mark the 47th Independence Anniversary celebration of Ghana.

Mawuko received the BIC Independence Anniversary Cycling Race Cup from Mr Richard Omane-Addo, Sales and Marketing Manager of BIC, the main sponsors.

Prosper Agbo came second with a time of 1:48:2 secs while Richard Zoka was third on 1:48:14 secs.

In all, 70 cyclists from Greater Accra, Eastern and Ashanti Regions took part in the competition.

Among the cycling clubs that took part in the competition were City Micro of Accra, River Park Clubs in Kumasi, Accra and Koforidua; Chairlice Riders Club and Meedi Minor Riders Clubs, both from Adukrom Akuapem.

Before the main event, a mass cycling competition was organised from Koforidua to Nkurakan and back, covering a distance of 7.5 km. In that event, Michael Nartey also known as Affoy, won the first place with a time of 30:17:46 secs, Sameed Idriss came second with a time of 30 mins 20:20secs while Fred Ayensu was third with a time of 30:21:17 seconds. 08 March 2004
