Blackstars captain and Sunderland defender, John Mensah was named sports personality of the year at the GUBA awards last Sunday.
Up against his team mate and Chelsea’s own Michael Essien, Mensah was honoured for his fantastic performance at the World Cup steering the Blackstars to reach quarter finals.
Speaking at the event, the Blackstars captain said “I am very speechless and proud to have won this award at the very first GUBA awards. It’s amazing! “ In its first year, the GUBA awards proudly celebrated the hard work of Ghanaians in the UK. Other winners on the night included legendary group OSIBISA, Josh Hair beauty salon, Ohema Ohene, Belinda Owusu, Gold coast Restaurant, DJ Teddy Abrokwah etc.
The night also saw an exclusive performance from Mensah’s team mate Asamoah Gyan and Hiplife heavyweight Castro performing their hit single African Girls. “I am proud to be here to support my two brothers in football; John Mensah and John Painstil who is also the patron of GUBA. There couldn’t have been a better place for me to give my first exclusive performance with Castro in the UK than at the GUBAs”, said the Blackstars frontman Asamoah Gyan.
The Blackstars were the final winners of the night, awarded specially for their world cup performance and for making Ghana the first African nation to reach the quarter final of the competition.
