Lionel Messi ended his scoring dry spell while Julian Alvarez also scored, propelling Argentina into the Copa America final with a decisive 2-0 victory over Canada at MetLife Stadium on Tuesday night.

Argentina, the defending champions, showcased their seasoned prowess against Jesse Marsch's unexpectedly successful semi-finalists, capitalizing on scoring opportunities and restricting Canada to a solitary shot on goal.

Messi initiated Argentina's offensive efforts, narrowly missing a shot from outside the penalty area. Alvarez opened the scoring in the 23rd minute, latching onto Rodrigo de Paul's through ball and slotting it home. Messi nearly doubled the lead before halftime but missed the target after a skillful dribble past two Canadian defenders.

After halftime, Messi found the net, redirecting Enzo Fernandez's powerful shot to secure a two-goal advantage in the 51st minute. Canada had their moments in the second half, mounting several threatening attacks. However, their momentum waned after Alphonso Davies left the pitch due to an ankle injury with 20 minutes remaining.

Argentina then comfortably managed the game, continuing to pose a threat on counterattacks and maintaining a safe distance from Canada, smoothly sailing into their third consecutive major tournament final.

The final is slated for Sunday, July 14, 2024.
