Former Ghanaian midfielder, Michael Essien, has stated that he needs more experience before taking on a major coaching role, including the Black Stars of Ghana.

Essien explained that although he was approached for the assistant coach position with the Black Stars, he is not ready for the stress that comes with such a role at the moment.

The legendary Chelsea player highlighted that leading training sessions, answering media questions, and handling other responsibilities require more experience.

However, Essien mentioned that he would be open to a coaching role in the future once he has gained sufficient experience.

“For now, I’m not considering being a head coach; it’s too stressful. Being the main man with all the media and cameras in your face is definitely not for me. But you never know. Maybe at some point, I would love to do it if that time comes,” he told Fentuo Tahiru of JoyNews when asked why he declined the Black Stars coaching job.

Essien completed his UEFA License A course in 2023 and is currently serving as an assistant manager for Nordsjaelland FC in Denmark.

The 42-year-old has been with Nordsjaelland since 2020, gaining experience while completing his coaching course.

In March 2024, Essien was considered for the Black Stars coaching position, but the Ghana Football Association ultimately chose Otto Addo.

He officially retired from football in 2020, two years after ending his international career, enjoying a distinguished career with top European clubs such as Lyon, Chelsea, Real Madrid, and AC Milan.

His tenure at Chelsea was particularly memorable, where he spent nine years and left as a club legend.
