Footage has emerged of the Ghana midfielder working on his fitness at the Blues' Cobham training ground
Michael Essien has taken to social media to share a video of him training at Chelsea’s Cobham training ground.
The Ghana legend, writing on his @iam_ess Instagram handle, shared a video of himself focusing intently while working on an exercise bike.
The video, in which the Bison is wearing a Chelsea training kit, is accompanied by the words “Let’s gooo,” a statement which will fuel the suggestion that the midfielder remains on the hunt for a new club.
The 33-year-old left Panathinaikos earlier in the year after struggling to make a sustained impact with the Greek giants, and his struggles to find a new club suggest that he may be having difficulties convincing potential suitors of his fitness.
The latter portion of Essien’s career has been ravaged by injury, with the powerhouse struggling to recreate the successes he enjoyed during the first half of his time at Stamford Bridge.
In total, he spend nine years in West London, winning two Premier League titles, four FA Cups, the League Cup in 2007 and the Champions League in 2012.
He spent a year on loan with Real Madrid, working under former Blues boss Jose Mourinho, before moving onto AC Milan in 2014.
Despite his return to Cobham, it appears highly unlikely that Essien is on the brink of a return to full-time action at Chelsea. He would surely struggle to adapt to the intensity demanded by Antonio Conte, while the Blues already have John Obi Mikel and Cesc Fabregas kicking their heels on the touchline as they struggle to oust N’Golo Kante and Nemanja Matic from the starting XI.
