Michael Essien’s contract at AC Milan is coming to an end this summer, but the Ghana legend is unlikely to be out of work for long.

According to Tuttosport, Essien has received offers from both Major League Soccer and the Indian Super League.

While a move to the United States may seem like the natural choice for Essien, the Indian top flight has become an appealing option after investment brought the likes of Alessandro Del Piero, David Trezeguet and Nicolas Anelka to the Super League.

Essien’s time at Milan has been disappointing. He arrived a year and a half ago after leaving Chelsea, but has struggled to have a major influence at the San Siro.

Injuries have played their part—as has been the case for much of the Black Star’s recent career—and the 32-year-old has managed only seven starts in Serie A this season. When he has been fit, his performances have often fallen way below the standards the West African has managed throughout his career.

Essien enjoyed nine illustrious years at Chelsea, winning two Premier League titles, four FA Cups, the League Cup title and the Community Shield. He also lifted the Champions League in 2012. The midfielder, who was named BBC African Footballer of the Year in 2006, has also featured for Olympique Lyonnais, SC Bastia and Real Madrid.

The Bison represented Ghana at both the 2006 and the 2014 World Cup, as well as three Cup of Nations competitions.

InsideFutbol have named Orlando City Soccer Club and New York Red Bulls as the two Major League Soccer teams which have expressed an interest in the midfielder, although FC Dallas have previously attempted to bring the experienced campaigner to the United States.
