Former Ghana striker Godwin Attram feels Michael Essien should be recalled into the Black Stars having recovered from injury and is now playing again for Panathinaikos.

The 32-year-old has managed to play successive games for the Greek giants after putting his injury woes behind him.

Essien was unable to play for Panathinaikos when he first arrived as a big name signing in the summer.

A series of successive injuries robbed the Ghana international off making his debut for the Greek club until only last month.

And Godwin Attram believes his former Ghana teammate still has a lot to offer the nation with his immense worth of experience under his belt and ought to be returned to the Black Stars.

"Football is all about strength and mental toughness," Attram told Happy FM.

"So if he has regained his fitness and is performing well at his club, I don't think it is a problem.

"We need these old players to guide the youngsters with their experience so I see no reason why the doors to the national team be closed to him."

Michael Essien was however tagged as one of the ‘rebels’ that played a leading role in wrecking Ghana’s campaign at the 2014 World Cup over a bonus row.

He refused to warm up in Ghana’s final group game in Brazil against Portugal and has been asked by the Ghana FA to give reasons why – something he is yet to do over one year on after the World Cup.
