The Communications Director of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Henry Asante Twum, has disclosed that his organisation paid former Black Stars coach Milovan Rajevac $100,000 after his dismissal in 2021.

He explained that after the Serbian coach was sacked in 2021 following an abysmal AFCON performance, he reported the GFA to the Federation of International Football Association (FIFA) over non-payment of his compensation fee.

Asante Twum indicated that FIFA’s committee ruled in favour of Rajevac, and thus the GFA was compelled to pay a significant amount of $100,000 to avoid facing sanctions from the football governing body.

Speaking in an interview with Joy FM, the GFA spokesperson clarified that the Ministry of Youth and Sports could not support the payment.

“When Milo [Milovan Rajevac] was fired, it became an issue because he didn’t have time to waste, so he went to FIFA. FIFA ruled in Milo’s favour, and we had to pay over $100,000. It was about $117,000 or so. Despite several pleas, the Ministry [Youth and Sports] wasn’t forthcoming, so the FA had to settle the amount,” he said.

He disclosed this information while addressing calls for the Black Stars coach Otto Addo to be sacked after a disastrous performance in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Asante Twum indicated that monetary issues are part of the reason the GFA is engaging in extensive consultation, including with the government, before Otto Addo’s future is decided.

It is the first time in 20 years that Ghana has failed to qualify for the 2025 AFCON, leading to pressure on the coach.
