Ministry of Youth and Sports observes minute silence for Mills

Accra, Aug. 1, GNA – The Ministry of Youth and Sports was not been left out of the one-minute solemn observation for former President John Evans Atta Mills.

Following a Government directive, the citizenry was informed to observe a minute's silence for the former President on Tuesday (July 31) at exactly 14h15 GMT, which marked exactly the one-week of his passing.

A statement from the Ministry copied to GNA Sports said the staff led by Clement Kofi Humado, Minister of Youth and Sports converged at the Conference Room to observe the 60-second silence.

It said the Minister paid glowing tribute to the late President, whom he shared a cordial relationship due to the latter’s love for sports.

“The late President contributed immensely to the promotion and development of Youth and Sports in the country and was also committed to the expansion of the National Youth Employment Programme as well as the launch of the National Youth Policy.

“The late President was always ready to make funds available to our national teams. To this end, anytime any of our national teams had any funding challenges, he would quickly call the Minister for Finance and Economic Planning to get the problem sorted out,” Humado said.

Former President Mills, a keen sports fan who also held senior positions at the then National Sports Council (now National Sports Authority) and the Ghana Olympic Committee, passed away on Tuesday, July 24 at the 37 Military Hospital after taken ill.
