KWOFIE WINS 25 KILOMETRE WALK

Jeandy Nyamekeh Kwofie, a Western regional race walker has won the 25 kilometre walk spanning Cape Coast to Elmina and back just last Sunday July 14 among a competitive field of 30 walkers.

The competitors were from Accra, Cape Coast and Takoradi who defied the searing heat to gave the walk their best shot.

First of its kind, the 25 kilometre race got underway due largely to the instructions of the world renowned race walking coach Dave MCgovern of the United States who is foreign coach of the Visco Walking Club.

Complementing the efforts of Dave, coach Albert Nukpezah ensured that teh walkers' performances and adherance to international standards wee in tune.

Afterwards, Mr. Nukpezah would be in league with Dave to assess overall performances to enable a comprehensive progrsamme to be drawn to enable a winsome world class team to be selected.

In the walk itself, second to cross the finishing line was Eric Kwaku Ampadu and the third Anthony Adjei all of Accra. Fourth was Surokameni Iddrisu, fifth Stanley Briamah and Vincent Asumang sixth in that order of merit.

In an interview with the veteran walkers Asumang and Briamah, they explained that their slow time was tactical because they were following instructions laid down for them by the two coaches.

GHANAIAN WALKERS FOR BELGIUM

As the world walking Cup competition draws near, several walking countries are gearing up their loins for the prestigeous competition. One of such countries is Ghana.

Members of the Visco Walking Club will represent Ghana in the august competition said to be 20 kilometres on July 26.

According to an invitation sent by Mr. Hans Van der Knaap, it is one of a field of competitions lined up for walkers in preparation for the World Walking Cup in Italy on October 12-13 2002.

It will be recalled that Ghana first participated in this competion in 2000 when acer walker Vincent Asumang represented Ghana in the event. He subsequently went ahead to win the bronze medal in the All-Africa Games in South Africa.

This year, among those to represent Ghana are a tentative select side of which five will be picked from Stanley Briamah, Yaw Fordjour, Anthony Adjei, Surokameni Iddrisu, Ahmed Kofi Ali, Jeandy Nyamekeh Kwofie, Vincent Asumang and Ahmed Tijani Sanni.

Fortunately the organizers will bear for feeding and accommodation while Visco Walking Club with the support of ALITALIA GSA, ENERGIZER, PARLAYS BISCUIT, VOLTIC MINERAL WATER and BIRIWA BEACH HOTEL, will take care of air tickets.
