Former Black Stars midfielder Derek Boateng has opened up about the neglect he faced from his late father during his childhood.

He recalled how his mother worked tirelessly to support him in his father's absence.

Boateng mentioned that his father only began to reconnect with him after he achieved success and became a well-known footballer in Ghana.

In an interview with Fiifi Pratt on Kingdom FM, he shared, "I never saw my father around while I was growing up; it was always my mother. She is my rock and everything. My father was alive but had different families, so I didn't really know him. When I became successful, he started coming around, but it was difficult to connect with him."

Despite his father's neglect, Boateng acknowledged that he did support him but regrets not asking his father why he abandoned them during his childhood.

He added, "As a father, you don't need money to be there for your kids because money isn't everything. My biggest mistake was not asking him why he left us when I was young. He passed away three years ago, and I still regret not having that conversation. However, when I became successful, I helped him."
