Accra, May 28, GNA - This year's National Open Chess Championship will be staged at the Coconut Grove Regency Hotel in Accra on Saturday, May 30. Mr Eddie Thompson, Vice Chairman of the Ghana Chess Association who announced this in Accra on Thursday, said about 50 players are expected to take part in the one-day event which will be sponsored by the Association. He said the competition, which has very attractive prizes at stake, is also aimed at reviving the competition, which seems to be dying a natural death. Mr Thompson attributed the decline to what he claims is partly due to lack of sponsorship as a contributory factor to the Association's inability to hosting of many competitions to revive the sport. He therefore called on corporate bodies to as part of their corporate social responsibilities, to look into the sponsorship of the lesser-known sports. John Kojo Hasford will be defending the trophy he won last year. 28 May 09
