National stadiums will only host sport-related events - NSA board chair

The board chairman of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Seth Panwum, has announced that Ghana's stadia will be reserved exclusively for sports-related events.

This decision aims to protect the pitches from damage and keep them in optimal condition for sporting activities.

Panwum mentioned that this policy will remain in place until the NSA can acquire pitch covers to protect the grass during non-sporting events.

He also revealed that discussions have been held with the Ministry of Finance on generating revenue to support stadium renovations and maintain the pitches.

"When we look at other countries, even Wembley is used for concerts, but they ensure the pitch is protected. So, I have discussed with our Minister of Finance, through our sector minister, to see how urgently they can assist us.

"We are also mandated to generate revenue, and our gate proceeds are insufficient to meet that requirement," he said during a meeting with the Parliamentary Select Committee on Sports.

Regarding the Baba Yara Stadium ban, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) withdrew its approval due to issues such as an uneven playing field, poor drainage, and inadequate grass cover. This decision followed the Africa Cup of Nations Qualifying match between Ghana and Angola on September 5, 2024.

In response, the Ministry of Youth and Sports has directed the Ghana Football Association to invite CAF officials to inspect the Accra Sports Stadium and the Legon Stadium to determine if they meet the requirements to host Black Stars games.
