Accra, Jan. 12, GNA - A newly formed sports association, Colleges of Education Sports Association (COESA), aimed at developing sports in the various Colleges of Education in the country has been inaugurated in Accra.
The Association will seek to create a unique sports competition
for students in the various Colleges of Education to cater for their
sporting needs after years of competition at the secondary schools
level. The competitions will also provide the Colleges of Education
with the opportunity and arena to unearth more talents for the
nation in the various sporting disciplines. Mr Alfred Ndago, National President of the Principals
Conference (PRINCOF) of the Colleges of Education, said the
decision to form the association was influenced by agitations from
the institutions since they have outgrown their competitors in the
secondary schools. He described the inauguration of the group as 93a dream come
true", adding that it will serve as the right platform for students in
the Colleges of Education to exhibit their talents at the appropriate
stage. Mr Ndago regretted that sports in the Colleges of Education
has been neglected for too long, hence the need to take
appropriate steps to put it among the elite competitions in the
country. Ms Akua Sena Dansua, out-going Minister of Youth and
Sports, (MYS) inaugurating the Association said the formation of
the group falls in line with government's efforts to promote sports
in all segments of the society. She said it will provide government the opportunity to organize
sports right from the districts to the national level, adding that
plans are in place to stage the National Sports Festival by the close
of the year. This, she said will also serve as additional platform for
unearthing sporting talents for the nation. Ms Dansua said government will also take steps to provide the
needed infrastructure at the grassroots level to enhance the
development and promotion of sports in the country. The Minister later inducted a six member Executive Committee
of the Association into office. The officers included Pastor Luke Abugri-President, John
Eshun Famayeh 96 Vice President, Richmond Stephen Sokpo 96
General Secretary, John Listowel ZIlevu-Treasurer, Dauda Adamu
=96 Technical Affairs and Cecil Sackitey, representing Teacher
