Alex Adewale and Kafayat Omisore emerged champions of the men and women’s singles of the 2018 ITF Dan DeVan Wheelchair Tennis Futures Tournament at the Accra Sports Stadium Tennis Courts over the weekend.
The first ever UNIQLO ITF wheelchair Tennis Tour was sponsored by Dan DeVan group of companies with the support from Freedom Builders Construction Ltd, Kabaka Construction and Investment Ltd, Costless Ventures, C. Chunjee Ltd, One Yogo Ltd, Peppy The Prosthetist and Ann Mineral Water.
The men’s final was all Nigerian affair as Alex Adewale defeated two-time Paralympian Wasiu Yusuf 6-1, 6-1, while Kafayat Omisore also from Nigeria got the better of Jane A. Ndenga of Kenya 6-1, 6-4.
In the doubles event: Kafayat Omisore(NIG)/ Kemi Oluwasegun(NIG) ousted Bridget Nartey(GHA)/ Jane Ndenga(KEN) 6-4,6-4. And in the Men’s doubles final, Alex Adewale(NIG)/ Wasiu Yusuf(NIG) defeated Collins Omondi( KEN)/ Peter Munuve(KEN) 6-1,6-2.
Prior to the final on Saturday, at the Accra Sports Stadium Tennis Courts, Adewale defeated Kenyan top seed, Peter Naveh and later paired with Wasiu Yusuf to claim the doubles title at the expense of Kenyan duo, Peter Naveh and Collins Omonde, while Omisore also teamed up with Kemi Oluwasegun to beat Jane Ndenga, who paired with Bridget Nartey, to clinch the women’s doubles crown.
CEO of Dan DeVan Group of Companies, Mr. Daniel Nii Mensah, who facilitated the tournament and also footed most of the bills said the ultimate goal of sponsoring the tourney was to put smiles on the faces of the persons with physical disability players and also help Ghanaian players to earn ITF points in Ghana which will help them gain wildcard slot for the upcoming Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.
President of Ghana Tennis Federation Isaac Aboagye Duah(Abe), thanked all the sponsors who came on board to make the tournament a successful one.
One the other hand Henry Larbi the National Coordinator of Ghana Wheelchair Tennis who was the Tournament Director thanked all Stakeholders and sponsors for organizing the 1st International para-sports tournament in Ghana and called on well meaning Ghanaians to come to the aid of Ghana Wheelchair Tennis to organize National Ranking and ITF Tournaments in 2019.
