Nyantakyi advocates for national women's league

Accra, May 5, GNA - Kwasi Nyantakyei, President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has advocated the formation of a national women's soccer league to replace the cluster of competitions scattered around the country.

The President, 37 told the GNA Sports that the move would further strengthen the Association's drive to revamp the women's game in the country.

The Greater Accra and Ashanti Regions are currently the only sectors that organize some form of league competitions. Patrons of women football have often criticized the Association for orphaning the ladies' game in the country even though Ghana's Black Queens are among the frontiers of soccer on the continent. The FA capo however said "we intend giving it a new face", one that is capable of rubbing shoulders with that of the men. Even though the President reckons that the men's game is entirely different from the females, he told the GNA Sports that "we understand the peculiarity of the women's game and have made provisions in that direction to enable it blossom".

The commencement of the national league, according to Nyantakyi has been penciled for 2007.

To put the game even closer to the door-steps of women, the FA president said women would be trained in other sectors of the game such as coaching, refereeing and administration among others in their quest to meet the numerous challenges associated with women football. The national women soccer team even though has twice made it to the World Cup, they are yet to enjoy even a quarter of the luxury their male counterparts have chalked.

Currently, the Ghana's Black Queens are rated as the second best after Nigeria's Super Falcons.
