Botswana athlete Letsile Tebogo and his teammates received a grand hero’s welcome in Botswana to celebrate his immense feat at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, where he won the country’s first gold medal.

Hundreds of supporters painted their national stadium with sky blue colors as Africa’s fastest man arrived in the country’s capital, Gaborone.

The day, which was observed as a national holiday to celebrate the country’s first-ever gold medal, had both the old and young waving Botswana’s sky blue and black national flag in the stadium.

Tebogo and the Botswana Olympic team were given a presidential ride in the stadium as they were received by President Mokgweetsi Masisi.

The 21-year-old athlete gained international recognition when he won the men’s 200m with a time of 19.46 seconds.

Tebogo beat USA stars Noah Lyles and Kenny Bednarek to win the gold medal in the competition. Botswana also made themselves proud as they won silver in the men’s 4x400m relay.

The celebrations kicked off at the airport when the team touched down and were welcomed by traditional dancers.

Tebogo’s gold medal surpasses Namibian Frankie Fredericks' silver medal in the men’s 200m at the Olympic Games.

Nijel Amos won Botswana’s first Olympic medal (silver) at the 2012 London Games in the 800m, followed by a bronze medal in the men’s 4x400m relay at Tokyo 2020.
