World Boxing president Boris van der Vorst addressed the controversy surrounding female boxers Imane Khelif from Algeria and Lin Yu-Ting from Taiwan, stating he has not seen "one single test" proving they are transgender.
He emphasized that the criticisms and disrespect directed at them are unwarranted and should not be tolerated.
Boris insisted that unless medical tests prove they are not qualified to compete as females, they should not be insulted.
“I have not seen one single test that is proving that [the boxers are] transgender. That’s the reason why it’s not very respectful for the boxers who are competing here to speak about them in these terms.
"When there is proof, yeah, that’s a different situation. But I haven’t seen anything that proves it,” Boris said in a post shared by Mario Nawfal on X on August 7, 2024.
The scrutiny over Khelif and Lin Yu-Ting's eligibility intensified after Khelif's 46-second victory over Italian female boxer Angela Carini.
Carini later apologized for her reaction, expressing respect for the IOC's decision on Khelif's eligibility.
Despite the controversy, Khelif has advanced to the female boxing finals.
World Boxing aims to organize both men's and women's boxing events at the 2028 Games in Los Angeles.
