Olympics edge Dwarfs in FA Cup round of 64

Accra Great Olympics are through to the Round of 32 of the MTN FA Cup after defeating Cape-Coast Ebusua Dwarfs in the Round of 64 on penalties on Thursday.

Fulltime saw both teams head to head in a 1-1 draw, with Olympics snatching victory after a nerve-racking penalty shootout that ended 5-3.

The session started with the visitors, Dwarfs, holding domination and piling pressure on Olympics and it did not take long for Richard Gaisie to put his side ahead over the hosts after 25 minutes.

Olympics gradually got into the groove but couldn’t pull level before the break. However, they opened the second stanza stronger than the first, with men pouring forth in search of an equaliser.

Dwarfs resisted, safeguarding their slim lead amid the unfaltering pressure from the opposing side but succumbed after the hour mark when Musah Mohammed handled a ball in the box in an attempt to clear.

Without hesitating, the referee pointed to the spot kick, as Olympics’ players bumped fists in joy.

Central defender Godfred Asante stepped up and easily levelled for the home team by the 67th minute.

Olympics took control of the game afterwards and continued to surge forth, with former Ghanaian international Godwin Attram marshalling the midfield. However, they failed to claim a winning goal, as Dwarfs goalkeeper Kofi Mensah thwarted most of the close range efforts.

The game ended 1-1 and went on to penalty shootout. Dwarfs scored three of their five kicks through Ata Mensah, Kwame Boateng, and Nicolas Gyan while Olympics successfully transformed all their kicks to carry the day.
