Ghana international Mohammed Polo has described late Opoku Afriyie as one of the best strikers the country has produced.

Polo’s comment comes following the demise of the former Black Stars prolific striker.

The former Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak player died on Sunday March 29, 2020 in Kumasi at the age of 75.

Known in football circles ‘Beyie’, he was an integral member of the Black Stars squad that won Ghana’s third Africa Cup of Nations trophy in 1978. He scored twice when Ghana beat Uganda 2-0 in the final.

Opoku was also the top scorer in the Ghana elite football league in 1979 and 1981.

Mohammed Polo who shared the pitch together with Opoku Afriyie during their time with the Black Stars speaking after his demise could not hide his striking abilities which can be likened to former Germany striker Gerd Muller.

“Opoku Afriyie is one of the best strikers the country has produced. You can compare him to Gerd Muller. He was on the same level as him”

“Both Opoku and Muller were fine strikers you can talk about. They can score goals at will. Frankly speaking he has paid his dues for mother Ghana as a footballer” he told Onua FM in an interview.
