Opoku wins Lipton Medal Golf

Tema, June 28, GNA - Ernest Opoku returned a net score of 70 to win the maiden Lipton Monthly Medal Open Golf Championship played at the Tema Country Golf Course on Saturday.

Opoku who played 36 Back and 38 Front with a Handicap of four, swept through a field of 100 golfers to clinch his first medal victory of the year.

He was followed by Matthias Dorfe with 71 net, Francis Andoh came third with 73 net while Francis Torgah took the fourth position with 77 net, beating H.A. Gouvinus and Kwabena Boakye on count-back. The Ladies encounter was won by Florence Etwi-Barimah with 91 net, Esi Cobbina placed second with 92 net while Ama Morgan took the third position with 101 net.

The one-day 18-hole Stable-ford competition which was opened to amateur golfers in the Greater Accra Region, was sponsored by Unilever Ghana Limited.

Mr Kweku Okyere, Captain of the Tema Country Golf Club praised Unilever company for sponsoring the event and called on other corporate bodies to help develop the sport in the country.

Mr Ebenezer Acheampong, Brands Manager of Unilever Ghana said the sponsorship of the event forms part of the company's corporate social responsibilities.

He gave the assurance that the company would continue to support the development and promotion of the sport in the country.
