The Annual Osagyefo Cup Competition kicks off on Saturday September 19, at the Half Assini Senior High School in the Jomoro District of the Western Region in honour of Ghana’s first President Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.
The event marks the fifth edition of the competition and would be participated by 10 Senior and Technical High Schools from seven Municipal and District Assemblies in the Western Region, with the aim of promoting good sanitation among the students and the citizenry along the coastal belt of the region.
Under the theme: "A Clean Ghana: Attitude makes a Difference", the event is scheduled to help identify and groom, as well as build on the career of lucky talents to be discovered during the games.
Participating schools include, Half Assini Senior High School (HASCO), Annor Adjaye Senior High school (ANASS) all from the Jomoro District, Fiaseman Senior High school (FIASEC) in the Tarkwa Nsueam Municipality, Huni/Valley Senior High school (HUNIVAS) in the Prestea Huni Valley District, and Daboase Senior High School (DASSEC) in the Wassa East District.
The rest are the Nsein Senior High School (Nseinsco) in the Nzema East Municipality, Ghana Secondary Technical School (GSTS) in the Takoradi Metropolis, Kikam Technical Institute (KIMTECH), Essiama Secondary Technical School (ESTS) and Nkroful Agricultural Senior High School, all in the Ellembele District.
Mr Koame Adonle Mieza, Executive Director of Programmes of the Nzema Events Management (NEM), promoters of the competition, said activities earmarked for the three-day celebration includes soccer, quiz competition and a lecture for the students.
He said whilst the competition is seeking to unearth and promote talents, it would also foster tolerance and mutual understanding between the citizenry within the region as well as highlight on the ideological principles that Dr Nkrumah stood for.
He said the event would be climaxed with a durbar of Chiefs and people of Half Assini and its environs, students, politicians, clergymen and other high profile dignitaries on Monday September 21.
Mr Adonle explained that in order to help shape the talents, who would be identified during the competition, the NEM had entered into a partnership agreement with a first division football team- Karela Football Club, in the Western region to groom and build on the career of those chosen and called on all to support to make the event a successful one.
The Saigha Foundation, a non- governmental organisation based in Nzema is partnering NEM to host the event whiles Tullow Ghana Limited, Ghana National Gas Company Limited, Karela Group and the Ellembele Member of Parliament are providing sponsorship.
Other sponsors include, Prestea Huni Valley, Jomoro, Nzema East Municipal and Wassa East District Assemblies, as well as Members of Parliament for Wassa East and Prestea Huni Valley.
Winners of the tournament would take away a trophy, cash prizes, set of jerseys, plagues, certificates, medals, among others.
Category of talents to be identified include, best player of the tournament, goal king, best goalie, best defender, most disciplined team, best coach and the promising player of the tournament.
