Coach Frimpong Manso has indicated that his generation of Black Stars played for the nation without any financial gains, unlike today whereby playing for the national team comes with many financial benefits.

The Black Stars are currently involved in a bonus row with the Ministry of Youth and Sports over their unpaid bonuses for beating both Mauritius and Uganda.

And although the government has decided to cut down the winning bonus of the team from $10,000 to $5,000, the playing body are yet to agree to that.

Frimpong Manso who was an integral part of the Black Stars in the early late 1980’s and early 1990’s has added his voice to the ongoing row which even forced the Black Stars to delay the flight to Comoros in their goalless draw game against the Islanders on Friday.

“I think we played for the Black Stars for free, because it was big an honour to wear the national team jersey, but it is different these days, because they might have seen how some of the ex-Black Stars players are suffering and some of them died as paupers, so they are guarding against such situations,” he told Hot FM.

The Black Stars will take on Comoros Island in the 2 leg of their World Cup qualifiers on Tuesday at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium, Kumasi.
