Pappoe insists on fairness for Appiah

Accra, May 7, GNA - Fred Pappoe, Vice President of the Ghana Football Association, (GFA) has clamoured for fairness in respect of Black Stars skipper Stephen Appiah's continued stay in the team. There have been divergent views on the consistent inclusion of the unattached Appiah in Black Stars matches, and Pappoe insists his call up is in line.

The GFA Veep who doubles as the Chairman of the Black Stars Management Committee, told GNA Sports that the club-less skipper has not exhibited any signs that calls for a review of his inclusion into the Stars team.

"I think some of the comments about Appiah are just unfair. Despite his current status, he has delivered every time he is called up for duty."

Pappoe stated emphatically that Appiah's performance has been more encouraging than some of his attached colleagues.

"He (Appiah) trains with Brescia (Italian Serie B side), but his performance is often high above some of his colleagues who are attached. "I don't think we are doing him any favours by inviting him, rather he is in the team on merit."

The GFA Veep added that the recent comments may have affected Appiah psychologically, and called for a halt to the remarks. He, however, explained that an invitation to the national team is at the discretion of the head coach, which his outfit will have to throw its weight behind.

"If the coach thinks that his (Appiah's) performance has fallen and does not need his services, we will equally support it." Pappoe therefore called on all to lend their support towards the team's ability to qualify for the South Africa 2010 World Cup. The Stars next play the Eagles of Mali on June 7 at the Stade 26 Mars in Bamako.
