Exchequers Maintain Winning Streak:

Exchequers of the Bank of Ghana maintained their unbeaten run in the Pepsi Hockey League when they crawled from an early goal they conceded, to hammer Golden Sticks of GCB Limited 5-1.

The Central Bankers, who came into the game with an unbeaten record in the league, started as overwhelming favourites over their Accra High Street and one time biggest rivals. Golden Sticks, who have been transformed enormously since Coach R. Quaye took charge of the team, set a blistering pace for their much fancied opponents pinning them to their half. A hard hit from a dead ball situation outside the circle in the 11th minute resulted in a crisp deflection from the stick of Joseph Ampoe to put the ball beyond the reach of the Exchequers goalie for the 1st goal of the match. Undaunted by the initial shock, Exchequers wormed their way into the game and when they found their rhythm, a move from midfield put Emmanuel Nartey on course to shred the Golden Sticks defense line and plant the ball on right side of the goalie for the equalizer i! n the 15th minute. 9 minutes later Alfred 'MC' Armah took a run at the defense of Golden Stick from the left side of midfield, cut his way through into the circle and finished-off with a slammer that rocked the backboard in typical MC fashion to end the half 2-1 in favour of Exchequers.

The second half started on a fast note with Exchequers dominating proceedings. It came as little surprise therefore when in the 40th minute, Nartey completed a move from the right side of attack with a wicked deflection thus adding to his tally and taking his team 3-1 up. Golden Sticks lost their steam from then and failed to be as competitive as they had been in the first half thus allowing Exchequers more room to maneuver. Samuel Kwaw punished the Commercial Bankers for their loss of concentration in defense when he drifted to the top of the circle to plant the ball on the blind side of the helpless goalie for the defending champions' 4th from a pull-out. Captain Ben Tarley completed the day's job with a penalty corner goal 2 minutes from time to end the game 5-1.

In the other matches, title chasers Trustees of SSNIT showed no mercy on Marine Sticks when they pounded them 7-0 to keep their title hopes alive. CEPS struggled to beat Veterans 2-0 while Kingsticks made light work of Citizens who they beat 2-1.

Multistix continued their winning streak with a 2-1 victory over Reformers of Ghana Prisons in their tightly contested match. Goalie Max Otoo was outstanding for Multistix, pulling off a series of dramatic saves to preserve the Multistix victory.

The league goes on recess to allow Clubs participate in the annual Oguaa Fetu Afahye Hockey Fiesta scheduled for 6-8 September.
