Police take lead after beating Prisons

Accra, Aug. 8, GNA - The Ghana Police Female Handball Team inched closer to the national title when they defeated the Prison Service by 20 goals to 18 in a league match decided at the Azumah Nelson Sports Complex at the weekend.

With both teams going into the match undefeated, the Police Machine relied on their superior stamina to coast ahead after the game had remained at parity for the greater part of the first half. The first encounter between the teams ended 17-17 and as fans thought Saturday's game too was heading towards a stalemate, Hajara Mahama produced a moment of brilliance to aid her side to victory. And with three matches to end the season, it appears the Police team have a hand on the trophy as they are tipped to easily win the rest of their matches.

In a male encounter, which preceded the match, HOSTAC beat Old hands by 20 goals to 15 due largely to the superlative play of Samuel Akushie and goalkeeper Nii Amu Ankrah who produced some great saves. Armed Forces failed to live up to expectation when they succumbed to Fire Service by 21 goals to 25, while Future Stars humbled Asomdwe 19-16 in the final match of the weekend.

The competition continues on Thursday with Prisons facing Future Stars at the Prisons Sports Complex, while HOSTAC clash with Asomdwe at the Azumah Nelson Sports Complex on Friday.

And at the Burma Camp, Armed Forces play host to the Ghana Police Setvice in another crunch match.
