Powers to defend title against Gbenga

Accra, Aug 30, GNA - Aryitey Powers, National and West Africa Super Middleweight Champion is scheduled to defend his title against Nigeria's Michael Gbenga on September 30, at the Azumah Nelson Sports Complex, Kaneshie in Accra.

The fight, which will be under the auspices of the Commonwealth Sports Awards and Ambitions Boxing Promotions, will provide local boxing fans another thrilling encounter considering the background of the two boxers.

Hard punching Powers, whose last fight on Friday saw him knocking out Flash Ibole Issaka in the fourth round, will however find Gbenga, who is also endowed with similar qualities, a tough nut to crack. Gbenga who is noted for his hard and 'killer punches' as well as his ability to withstand any form of pressure from opponents' nearly stunned Ghanaians in his last fight when he managed to end a 12 round bout with Braimah Kamoko a.k.a. "Bukom Banku" when the two clashed for the National and West Africa Light Heavyweight title.

It is for these reasons that local boxing fans will have much to cheer about when the two step into the ring to battle for the title. The bout dubbed "Who Takes The Bragging Rights", according to Mr Al Hamilton, Chairman of the Common Sports Awards will feature four other bouts.

Bilal Mohamed, National and West Africa Lightweight Champion will defend his title against Ben "Congo Soldier" Ankrah while Thomas Awimbono will square it off with Ishmael Tetteh in a Super Lightweight contest.

Mortein boxing sensation, George Ashie will come up against Samuel Danso in a Super Featherweight contest.

Also on the bill is another Heavyweight bout between Frank Kweku Frempong and a yet to be named Nigerian opponent.
