Predictions for next African Champions League

Esperance have 7 points from 3 games Esperance have 7 points from 3 games

The Confederation of African Football’s Champions League is midway through the group stage. The 16 clubs competing in this season’s tournament have all played three matches. The next group stage matchday will take place on July 27th and 28th. The CAF Champions League group stage will conclude on August 28th.

The top two sides in each group will advance to the quarterfinals. This year’s CAF Champions League will conclude in the middle of November with the winner advancing to the FIFA Club World Cup. From the original 59 teams there are just 16 clubs remaining. Which African teams will prevail on matchday four in the CAF Champions League and set themselves on the path to the quarterfinals?

Group A:

KCCA vs. Esperance de Tunis – July 28

Tunisia’s Esperance de Tunis have set the pace in Group A. The side has collected seven points from a possible nine. Manager Khaled Ben Yahia has led his club to two wins and a draw. The side has tallied a +4-goal difference. KCCA have secured just three points thus far but progression to the quarterfinals can still happen. The team’s attack must score more goals for that to happen. EST won the last meeting between the clubs, 3-2.

Winner: Esperance de Tunis

Township Rollers vs. Al-Ahly – July 28

Egypt’s Al-Ahly have struggled in Group A. The side has collected just four points thus far. Three of those points came in a 3-0 thumping of Township Rollers. Patrice Carteron’s team is far stronger than Township despite goals being hard to come by. The Egyptian club should get on track with a win against Township and put pressure on EST at the top of Group A. Winner: Al-Ahly

Group B:

Difaa El Jadidi vs. ES Setif – July 27

Both clubs are in desperate need of a win to have any hope of progressing from Group B. Setif sit third on three points with their only win coming against Difaa El Jadidi. Setif controlled much of the previous match and an own goal was Difaa’s only way to get onto the score sheet. Expect Abdelhak Benchikha’s Setif side to win again versus Difaa.

Winner: ES Setif

MC Alger vs. TP Mazembe – July 28

TP Mazembe last won the Champions League in 2015 and they are making a bid to do it all over again. Mirjalol Qosimov has his side in good form as Mazembe are a perfect nine points from nine in the group stage. Mazembe’s Ben Malango is the second leading scorer in the competition with six goals. MC Alger will test the Congelese side on matchday four. Mazembe won with an 88th minute goal in the previous fixture. This time, Alger should pull off the victory according to an English sports bookmaker.

Winner: MC Alger

Group C:

Mamelodi Sundowners vs. AS Togo-Port – July 27

AS Togo-Port downed Mamelodi Sundowners in their last meeting winning 1-0. Now the two sides will meet in Pretoria and both are in need of all three points. Sundowners are yet to win in the Champions League group stage and have a –1-goal difference. AS haven’t been great in front of goal, recording just two strikes and a –3-goal difference. Sundowners may finally get their first win of the competition.

Winner: Mamelodi Sundowners

Wydad Casablanca vs. Horoya – July 28

Wydad Casablanca and Horoya are locked on five points apiece in Group C. Wydad are the reigning CAF Champions League winners and the club look good value to win it again. The last fixture between the sides ended in a 1-1 draw in Guinea. At home, Wydad should grab all three points according to Caliente.

Winner: Wydad Casablanca

Group D:

1 de Agosto vs. ZESCO United – July 27

1 de Agosto and ZESCO United played out a bore nil-nil draw on matchday three. Neither side has found the back of the net regularly. Both claim –1-goal differences and their meeting on July 27 won’t be much better than the last. Draw result are usually the best bet to place as the odds are higher.
