President Kufuor to receive Platinum Award

Accra, Feb 21, GNA - The Confederation of African Football (CAF) will honour President John Agyekum Kufuor of Ghana with the Platinum Awards at their annual ceremony billed for the country next month. President Kufuor becomes the second head of state to receive the award reserved for distinguished government officials.

Bode Opeseitan, Head of Public Relations and Outdoor Advertising of Globacom Limited organizers of the March 1, Glo-CAF Awards attributed the remarkable success achieved by the Black Stars under the administration of President Kufuor as part of the decision to honour him.

"The world today has risen to acknowledge the class of the Stars who some years back lost their twinkle and slacked as a force in African football".

Nigerian President, Olusegun Obasanjo was the first recipient of the award initiated by the continental body last year.

The event, a first comer in Ghana will have 13 categories. Michael Essien, Dideir Drogba and Samuel Eto'o Fils are gunning for the plush Footballer of the Year award.

Some of the categories include Young Player of the Year, Women Footballer of the Year, Coach of the Year and National Team of the Year that Ghana's Black Stars will be competing for.

Inter-Club Player of the Year, Club of the Year, Fair Play Award for national teams, Supporters' Club of the Year, African Legend Award, Africa's Finest Eleven and Gold Merit Achievement complete the list.
