Prince Adu Poku, one of Kotoko’s finest skippers became a household name during the Herbert Mensah administration. However, the difference between the fame and the respect he commanded during his peak in the 90’s and his financial status was like light and darkness, “Where are they” can confirm.

In an exclusive interview with Charles Osei Asibey on Happy FM on Monday, he revealed that throughout his spell with the Porcupine Warriors, he did not append his signature to any document by way of contract.

“I opted for Kotoko although Hearts of Oak gave me a better financial offer. Kotoko is a team I have relished from infancy,” said Poku. He mentioned that he only received ¢5m from a promised ¢10m before the Herbert Mensah era, and when he assumed office, he settled the difference.

The former Kotoko left footed player stated that Mr Mensah promised him an accommodation and a car because of his meritorious service. Poku, however, said that promise never came to pass. “I should have quit Kotoko with the likes of Yaw Sakyi after joining the club in ‘94, but Herbert told me in plain words that, you Adu, Kotoko needs you,” the player said.

He pointed out that he had an accident in ’99 which affected him so much and he had to be put under anesthesia before playing in most matches. Responding to whether hew has regrets of serving the Red Army, he answered in the negative.

Currently based in the Garden City, Kumasi, Poku indicated that he has gone into ‘hiding’ pursuing a coaching career, and promised to come back in style. He blamed the low standard in the local league to lack of respect for senior players by their junior counterparts.

Sounding religious, he said that he was comfortable in life by the grace of God, and that the right time, he will bounce back as a Kotoko coach.
