‘Proposals to have PL teams increased is 'STUPID'’

Ex-chairman of the Division One League Board Kwame Ntow Fianko says proposals to have Premier League teams increased from 16 to 18 teams is ‘STUPID’.

The proposal is considered the best way out for the GFA in a long drawn out legal battle against relegated King Faisal.

The Kumasi-based club are contesting their automatic relegation status after finishing 14th in last season’s Ghana Premier League.

This legal battle has resulted in an interlocutory injunction placed on the Ghana FA’s Ordinary Congress session without which the new Ghana Premier League cannot start.

The proposal add two more teams to the existing 16 in the Premier League is thus deemed the best way out of the legal quagmire the GFA finds itself with King Faisal and Ebusua Dwarfs set to be the major beneficiary.

But Ntow Fianko says this proposal, of adopted by Congress, will be the ‘stupidest’ decisions ever by the Ghana FA as it goes contrary to FIFA’s rules on preserving sporting integrity.

“If Congress goes ahead with this proposal I think it will be the most stupid decision in the sense that the proposal is not founded in our regulations,” Fianko told Happy FM.

“You cannot therefore set a new law to take retroactive effect since the regulations have not been amended.

“Article 19 of FIFA regulations talks about preserving sporting integrity.

“That teams that qualify for league competitions must do so by sporting merits. Where will the sporting merit be if teams benefit from the passing of such a proposal?

“This proposal is therefore in breach of the FIFA rules.”

The three bottom teams at the end of every Ghana Premier League season are automatically relegated to make room for three teams to be promoted from the second tier league.
