Qualification places for Olympics games

Ghana’s final push for qualification places at the African Athletics Championship and the 2012 London Olympics games will be put to test as the National Athletics Championship begins at the El Wak Stadium.

The two-day championship brings together for the first time this year, the nations top athletes who are based in the country and abroad respectively.

Top sprinters Janet Amponsah and Ashaad Agyapong have come very close to securing qualification to the London 2012 Olympics in recent times.

The men’s’ and women’s’ relay teams will also get their first opportunity this year to race together with the hope of making of making the final cut for London. The men’s team, who are currently ranked 17th in the world, need to run a much better time than they did at last year’s rlg Ghana Grand Prix to secure a place within the top 15 relay teams in the world.

The Athletics scene has seen lots of activity locally with Ghana Athletics Association staging the 4th Maria Tsakos Junior Championship in March, followed by the victory at the West Africa Junior Athletics Championship two weeks later in Cote D’ Ivoire.

Meanwhile, www.liquidsportsghana.com understands that the newly acquired electronic timer will be officially outdoored during the two day event at the El Wak Stadium.

The equipment was acquired through the joint collaborative effort by the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Ghana Olympic Committee. The men’s and women’s relay teams
