Quao wins Media Majique Scrabble

Accra, May 2, GNA - Grandmaster Michael Quao continued his exploits in the game of scrabble when he scored a spread of 726 to win the first Media Majique and Research System Open Scrabble Championship played in Accra on Monday.

Quao who won all the eight games played, was presented with a magnificent trophy, cash and a certificate as his prize. Bennet Kpentey who won six games with a spread of 321, came second followed by C.M. Placca for also winning six games with a spread of 226 to place third while Christian Mensah placed fourth with a spread of 467 for winning five games.

Afia Appiah, a Management Consultant was adjudged the best lady player.

Mr Joseph Sasu-Boamah, the Tournament Director said the championship was organised by the Scrabble Association of Ghana as part of their trials to select players to represent the country at the African Scrabble Championship scheduled for Abuja, Nigeria from September 19 to 23.

He called on the youth to take active interest in the sport so as to improve upon their grammar.

Mr Kpentey, Chairman of the Scrabble Association of Ghana said the association has lined up a number of activities for the year but were faced with lack of funds to achieve results.

He noted that with the needed support, Ghana should be able to at least win a gold medal in the upcoming games in Nigeria. Mr Kpentey thanked Media Majique and Research Systems for sponsoring the event and called on the Ministry of Education and Sports and other corporate bodies to assist the association to develop the sport.
