Sports broadcaster Patrick Osei Agyemang, popularly known as Countryman Songo, expressed his disappointment after Razak Abalora was left out of Ghana's squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
He argued that the Petrocub FC goalkeeper is better than the three goalkeepers named in the Black Stars squad.
He advocated that players should be called based on merit, which he believes is the only model that can secure the country a qualification for the World Cup.
"Razak Abalora is better than those three goalkeepers. Call players based on merit; that is how we are going to qualify for the World Cup," he said on Adom TV.
He further highlighted reasons that make the former Asante Kotoko goalkeeper merit a call-up.
"This season he won a double. And it is not just about that, he is a very good goalkeeper and everybody knows. People claim his mistakes cost Ghana in the game against Morocco (2021). But those who have made worse mistakes and caused the team some painful defeats are still in there. He kept 7 clean sheets in 14 games. No one will wish the team bad if you call players based on merit," he added.
Black Stars head coach Otto Addo announced his squad for the qualifiers on Wednesday, May 29, 2024.
The team will visit Mali on Thursday, June 7, 2024, before hosting the Central African Republic on Monday, June 10, 2024.
