Rennes have halted their summer ambitions of signing Real Valladolid defender Mohammed Salisu due to the cost of the deal to rubbish claims the French side have reached an agreement with the La Liga side, GHANAsoccernet.com can report.

Media reports claimed on Thursday that Rennes had reached a a deal worth €12m including bonuses for 21-year-old Ghanaian central defender.

But that is turning out to be hoax after fresh reports emerged that Rennes are unable to pay for the hefty fee.

Valladolid's desire for a high fee, coupled with the player's wages, means the cost of the operation has been deemed too high.

It has been claimed the Brittany side went as far a contacting the Spanish outfit regarding the deal, according to reports, but were swiftly put off by the demands.

Spanish tabloid El Desmarque have revealed that Rennes have pulled out of the race to sign the hugely sought-after defender as the cost is deemed to high.

Salisu is now a viable options for the big clubs in France including Paris St-Germain, who are reported to be monitoring his situation.

A number of English clubs including Southampton have been linked with the talented centre-back.
